In October, the Aultman Orrville Family Birth Center received the David Hendershot Rural Health Promotion Award from the Ohio Hospital Association Foundation of Healthy Communities.

Each year, the David Hendershot Rural Health Promotion Award recognizes a small, rural hospital in Ohio that demonstrates a commitment to promoting a healthy community. The Family Birth Center of Aultman Orrville has been providing obstetric services to the Orrville and Wayne County communities for more than 60 years and is committed to promoting healthy lifestyles and providing health education to patients and families. Aultman Orrville is one of only ten critical access hospitals in Ohio that provides obstetrical services, and they integrate safe, personalized care to women and families. The birth center also empowers mothers to have the birth experience they desire.

The award, presented annually since 2007, was created in memory of long-time OHA staff member David Hendershot, who had a passion for rural health promotion in Ohio.

Judy Erb, vice president of Patient Services, and Janice Dennison, manager of the Family Birth Center, accepted the award on behalf of Aultman Orrville.

“The birth center staff takes prides and excels in providing individualized, family-centered care,” said Dennison. “Our physicians, midwives, nurses and support staff work together to care for the needs of each mother and family.”

The Family Birth Center at Aultman Orrville allows mothers and families to have freedom in choosing their birthing experience. The unit is equipped with the most modern technology, and large, state-of-the-art rooms accommodate family members. The unit also provides birthing options, including birthing tubs.

Dr. Marchelle Suppan, president and CEO of Aultman Orrville, is grateful to receive the award and proud of the birth center staff.

“We congratulate our wonderful Family Birth Center at Aultman Orrville Hospital and thank the OHA Foundation of Healthy Communities for the award,” stated Suppan. “This is another example of fulfilling our mission of leading our community to improved health.”
