As 2021 comes to a close, Aultman Orrville Hospital has reached yet another milestone as it celebrates its 70th anniversary with the most babies ever born at the hospital in a calendar year – currently 514 babies and counting.
“Despite a COVID record year, we continued to proceed with normal deliveries,” said Dr. Amelia Laing, chair of obstetrics/gynecology at Aultman Orrville. “Our hospital excels at providing choices for women. Our patients enjoy a general feeling of hominess throughout our unit, and all of their needs are immediately available 24/7.”
Aultman Orrville reached this milestone during the same year the hospital was recognized nationally as a Best Maternity Care Hospital by Newsweek. The distinction recognizes facilities that have provided exceptional care to mothers, newborns and their families, as verified by the 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Aultman Orrville Hospital was one of fewer than 225 to receive the prestigious accolade.
The hospital also celebrated the 20-year anniversary of its midwife program in 2020 with a visit from the first baby delivered by a midwife. Midwives provide care, education, counseling and support to women and newborns during their pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period. Midwives also provide gynecologic and reproductive health services for women of all ages.
“Our patients can continue to feel comfortable and confident in our hospital, despite the recent COVID surge,” said Dr. Laing. “We are taking every measure of safety, which includes negative pressure rooms and maintaining an adequate supply of personal protective equipment. We consistently provide a large support team to assist with every situation.”
