Thanks to the efforts and hard work of Boy Scout Reece Frye, Aultman Orrville’s weather-worn helipad received a visual upgrade, allowing pilots to land their emergency transport helicopters with greater confidence.

Frye is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 73 in Smithville, Ohio. As part of his pursuit to earn Boy Scouts’ highest achievement – Eagle Scout – Reece is required to perform a community service project. Because there were so many projects to select from, he sought input from another Eagle Scout, his father, Jerry, who works for Cleveland’s Metro Life Flight.

Reece approached Aultman Orrville regarding the heliport and received a green light from hospital officials to proceed. As the physical work began, Reece had to adhere to a myriad of rules and restrictions involving dimensions and markings, as well as reflective paint and reflective markers. In addition to the actual landing pad, there were a number of regulations involving the windsock provided to help pilots with a valid wind direction.

“The project will benefit people in need of emergency medical attention throughout our region for years to come,” said Jennifer Kessel, CEO, Aultman Orrville Hospital.

The heliport is located just east of the hospital and allows for emergency medical flights to safely and quickly transport critically ill patients to and from Aultman Orrville Hospital.

Although the heliport project is complete, Reece is also tasked with a list of other requirements, including earning several merit badges. All Boy Scouts who wish to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout must meet these requirements and submit their bid before they turn 18 years of age.
